Dubai exceeded some of our expectations, challenged others, and gave us a travel experience we’ll never forget.
High: the skyline that took our breath away
The view from the Burj Khalifa was breathtaking. We went there shortly before sunset & it was an experience of a lifetime to see the city change from golden hues to a sea of twinkling lights. It helped us realize just how ambitious Dubai’s architecture is.
Tip: Buy tickets in advance so you won’t be stuck in long lines.
High: unmatched luxury
Luxury is Dubai’s forte. From staying in 5-star hotels with impeccable staff to exploring the Dubai Mall, we felt like royalty. We also had afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab, a luxury experience we will remember for many years to come.
Low: the heat shock
We knew it was going to be hot, but nothing could have prepared us for the sweltering July weather. It was a struggle even to walk outside. It limited some of our outdoor activities, and we were running from one air-conditioned area to the next. When we go back, we’ll definitely try to make it in the cooler months.
High: the desert adventure
Then there was the desert safari. The dune bashing was intense (and definitely not for the faint-hearted), and the camel ride and dinner under the stars were divine. There’s just something about the desert stillness that resonates with you. My husband loved the falconry demonstration, while I loved the henna painting the most.
High: a blend of cultures
We couldn’t believe how diverse Dubai was. Whether it was our Kenyan Uber driver or the Lebanese chef at the restaurant, everyone had a tale to tell. It’s a city where cultures intersect and this somehow made us feel more global.
Low: the price tag
Dubai is not a budget destination. We expected some splurges, but the costs of dining, activities, and even transportation added up fast. For example, we didn’t realize how pricey taxis could get until we saw our daily expenses. It’s definitely a place where you have to budget ahead.
Low: too much, too fast
Dubai is full of things to see, and we did not realize just how many there are. We were worn out by the time we got back from the trip, trying to take it all in. In retrospect, we would’ve spent more time seeing fewer, and not so quickly to cross every item off the list.
Low: the cultural divide
Dubai is modern and friendly, but there were times we weren’t sure of the customs. We didn’t know, for instance, how much affection was considered appropriate public behaviour, or if some clothes were just too casual. We decided to play safe, but a little more research ahead of time would have saved us a few bumps in the road.
