After our first trip to Dubai, these are the attractions we’d tell every traveler not to miss:
Burj Khalifa
Our favorite part of the day was spent on the observation deck of Burj Khalifa. The ride up in the elevator was impressively fast and once we exited, we were blown away at how far we could see.
Peering down at the miniature buildings, highways, and desert below really puts into perspective how big Dubai is. If you can time it, try going around sunset and watch the city transition from day to millions of glowing lights.
Kite Beach
Kite Beach was a refreshing break from the city. We biked our way along the seaside promenade and stopped for fresh coconut water from a street vendor. The kitesurfers were mesmerizing to watch and the street vendors sold some of the best snacks we had throughout Dubai.
Dubai Mall
Dubai Mall was another spot we spent way too much time at. We only planned on spending a couple of hours there, but left many hours later. This place is gigantic and there is so much to see. Even if you don’t want to shop, you could spend hours looking at the huge aquarium, indoor waterfalls, restaurants, etc.
We wandered around for hours just exploring every section and popping into cafes for some coffee. There was always something new around every corner.
Jumeirah Mosque
Visiting the Jumeirah Mosque was a peaceful and informative experience. We took a guided tour where they explained Islamic customs and the beautiful architecture. I really enjoyed all of the detailed work and peaceful atmosphere.
Plus, it was nice to be able to engage with the culture of the city we were visiting. It was honestly, like my husband said after we left, one of the most surprisingly rewarding parts of our whole trip.
Palm Jumeirah
Palm Jumeirah made us marvel at human ingenuity. We rode the monorail, and the island with its palm shape looked amazing from above. At Atlantis, The Palm, we flung ourselves on the water slides of Aquaventure Waterpark and floated on the lazy river. We strolled down to the beach afterwards, taking in the calm sea and the city. It was what my husband described as his “perfect blend of adrenaline and relaxation.”
Dubai Marina
Dubai Marina was like walking on a postcard. We rode on a traditional dhow night trip, with skyscrapers lit in the distance. Dinner on the boat was Arabic and international, and the breeze was just perfect. My favorite part? Watching my husband try to get the perfect picture while balancing his plate of dessert!
Desert Safari
The desert safari was the best part of the whole visit. Dune bashing in a 4×4 was exciting. I laughed and screamed while my husband held on for dear life. We rode camels and then enjoyed watching the sunset color the sand dunes gold and orange. The night ended with a simple barbecue dinner under the stars with belly dancing and henna art. It was like being transported into another realm.
Al Fahidi Historical District
Stepping into Dubai’s Al Fahidi Historical District was like breathing fresh air. Wandering around this neighborhood felt like walking down small alleyways with wind towers, galleries, and hidden cafes. We stopped into one cafe where we sampled Emirati coffee and dates. Sitting in this picturesque location, taking in all the sights of old Dubai, filled me with gratitude for the culture of this city.
Dubai Frame
The Dubai Frame was more than a marvel of architecture. It told the story of Dubai. Though my heart raced walking over its glass bridge, it gave us unbelievable views of old and new Dubai. On one side of the frame stood old Dubai with its markets and low-rise buildings. On the other side, rose Dubai’s new skyline.
Ski Dubai
Walking into Ski Dubai almost felt unreal. Within seconds, we had traded warm sunshine for subzero temperatures, all while surrounded by actual snow, ski slopes, and penguins.
I don’t think either of us anticipated how real it would feel to be skiing in the middle of a desert. Skiing, snowboarding, or just messing around in the snow is entertaining and unique, unlike any other attraction Dubai has to offer.
Dubai Miracle Garden
Who knew you could fit a flower garden this huge in the middle of a desert! There were flowers and sculptures and archways everywhere you looked. We could have walked around there for hours taking pictures. At every turn, there was another photo opportunity waiting for us. My favorite exhibit there was the Emirates airplane covered in flowers.
The Walk at JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence)
JBR walk became one of our favorite spots to grab an evening stroll. There are tons of cafés, restaurants, shops, and even street performers. Stopping to look in shop windows and watching the sun set on the nearby beach was beautiful. As it got dark and the lights turned on, it became even busier. It truly felt like one of the best spots in Dubai to feel the vibe of the city.
Global Village
Global Village was amazing because we got to feel like we went around the world in one night. Every pavilion had its own country-themed food, merchandise, and gifts. We had fun tasting all of the different foods like Turkish ice cream and Afghan dumplings. There were live shows that were really fun and lively, too. And we left with arms full of goodies from around the world.
Dubai Opera
Being a lover of live theatre, the Dubai Opera was a must-see. We went to watch a stunning musical in a beautiful dhow-shaped structure. Even my husband (who’s usually not a theatre person) confessed it was a highlight of the trip. Just the architecture alone was worth the visit.
Dubai Creek and Abra Ride
Our abra ride down Dubai Creek was pleasant and quaint. The small wooden boat ferried us through Dubai’s old town with markets on both sides. We stopped by local spice markets and gold souks where my husband unsuccessfully tried to haggle (and overpay) for a trinket.
